How the tiered pricing calculator works

Tiered pricing charges different per-unit rates depending on how many units are purchased, with lower rates for higher volumes. There are two fundamentally different ways to apply tiers, and confusing them can produce wildly different invoice totals. This calculator supports both: marginal (graduated) pricing, where each tier's rate applies only to the units within that tier's band; and flat (stairstep) pricing, where the single tier that contains the total quantity applies to every unit in the order.

Marginal total = Σ (units in tier × tier rate) across all tiers up to quantity ordered
Flat (stairstep) total = total quantity × rate of the tier containing that quantity
Marginal: units in tier = min(quantity, tier ceiling) tier floor
Effective per-unit price = total cost / total quantity

Marginal pricing works exactly like tax brackets — each band of units is priced at its own rate, and you never pay more-per-unit on the earlier units just because you bought more. Flat (stairstep) pricing can create pricing cliffs: ordering one unit more can drop the per-unit price enough that the total invoice decreases. Buyers near a tier boundary should always check whether ordering more units actually costs less in total.

Example

Worked example: 200-unit order, marginal vs. flat pricing

Example: 200 units, Tier 1 = $100/unit (1–100), Tier 2 = $80/unit (101–500)

A buyer orders 200 units. The price schedule is $100/unit for the first 100 units and $80/unit for units 101–500. The total cost differs significantly depending on whether the seller uses marginal or flat pricing.

Marginal: first 100 units × $100 + next 100 units × $80 = $10,000 + $8,000 = $18,000
Flat (stairstep): 200 units × $80 (Tier 2 rate) = $16,000
Difference: $2,000 — flat pricing saves the buyer 11.1% on the same 200 units

The same 200-unit order costs $2,000 more under marginal pricing than flat pricing. Always confirm which model applies before comparing supplier quotes.

Practical tips

Tips for buying and selling with tiered pricing

Tiered pricing structures are common in SaaS, cloud infrastructure, utilities, bulk manufacturing, and wholesale distribution. Misunderstanding the model — or failing to optimize order quantity — routinely leaves money on the table for buyers and revenue on the table for sellers.

  • Always ask: marginal or flat? These two models produce different totals for the same quantity. Before signing a contract or accepting a quote, confirm in writing which model applies and request a sample calculation at your expected volume.
  • Check the tier boundary as a buyer. Under flat pricing, ordering just above a tier floor can save more than the cost of the extra units. If the Tier 2 rate kicks in at 101 units, compare the 100-unit bill to the 101-unit bill — the 101-unit order is sometimes cheaper in total.
  • Model your annual volume, not your order volume. Many SaaS and utility contracts reset tiers monthly or annually. Your effective per-unit cost depends on annual consumption, not the size of any single order. Aggregate expected usage before selecting a plan tier.
  • Build tier-boundary awareness into procurement systems. For high-volume purchasing, set alerts when cumulative orders approach a tier threshold. A slight purchase-timing adjustment can shift thousands of units into a lower-cost band.
  • For sellers: use tiered pricing to increase average order value. Marginal pricing encourages buyers to order more because they always save on the incremental unit. Flat pricing creates stronger cliff incentives but requires careful positioning to avoid buyers gaming the boundary.

The effective per-unit price is a blended average — it is not the price of any individual unit under marginal pricing.

The calculator does not model minimum order quantities, volume rebates applied retroactively, cumulative volume discounts that reset on a contract anniversary, or subscription plan overages. SaaS pricing in particular may include base platform fees, per-seat charges, and usage metering simultaneously — this tool handles a single usage-based tier schedule. For complex multi-component pricing, build a custom pricing model in a spreadsheet or consult your vendor's pricing team.
