How to calculate chronological age (years, months, days)
Chronological age is a date subtraction done one unit at a time, borrowing between days and months the same way you borrow in ordinary subtraction. Work from the largest unit down:
- Years — subtract the birth year from the reference year.
- Months — subtract the birth month from the reference month.
- Days — subtract the birth day from the reference day. If the result is negative, borrow one month: add the number of days in the previous month and reduce the months count by one.
- Fix negative months — if months went negative after borrowing, add 12 and reduce the years count by one.

A worked example using the chronological age calculator
An examiner needs the exact chronological age of a child born 15 March 2016 for a norm-referenced assessment administered on the tool's reference date, 1 June 2026. Here is exactly how the calculator works it out.
Step 1 — Subtract the years
2026 − 2016 = 10 years. This is the starting whole-year count, before the month and day adjustments.
Step 2 — Subtract the months
June is month 6, March is month 3, so 6 − 3 = 3 months provisionally. No borrowing is needed yet because the day step does not go negative.
Step 3 — Subtract the days (and borrow)
Reference day 1 minus birth day 15 = −14, which is negative, so we borrow one month. The month before June is May, which has 31 days: 1 + 31 − 15 = 17 days, and the months count drops from 3 to 2. Months stayed positive, so no year borrow is needed.
Step 4 — Read the result

Chronological age vs biological age vs developmental age
"Chronological age vs biological age" is one of the most-searched age questions, and the two are genuinely different. Chronological age is fixed and objective — pure calendar time you cannot change. Biological age is an estimate of how old your body seems at the cellular and functional level, influenced by lifestyle, environment, and health, and it can be higher or lower than your chronological age.

School cut-off dates and age of entry
School systems set a cut-off date — a child must reach a given age by that date to enrol in a grade. Chronological age measured to the cut-off date decides eligibility, so the same date-subtraction matters for enrolment as for testing. A district requires a child to be 5 by 1 September. A child born 15 September 2020, measured at the tool's 1 June 2026 reference, is 5 years, 8 months, 17 days (total 2,085 days) — already past 5, so eligible.
