How the roofing calculator works

A roof's surface area is always larger than the house footprint because the surface is sloped. The calculator multiplies your footprint area by a pitch multiplier — a factor derived from the roof's rise-over-run ratio — to produce the true sloped roof area. It then divides by 100 to get roofing squares (the industry standard unit), applies a waste percentage for offcuts and alignment losses, and converts to bundles of asphalt shingles.

Worked example: hip roof on a ranch house

Example: 28 ft × 40 ft footprint, 6/12 pitch, hip roof

A homeowner is replacing shingles on a 28 ft × 40 ft ranch house with a hip roof pitched at 6/12. Hip roofs have more valleys and cut angles than a simple gable, so he budgets 15% waste. He needs to know how many squares to order and how many bundles of architectural shingles to buy.

footprint = 28 × 40 = 1,120 ft²
roof area = 1,120 × 1.118 = 1,252 ft²
squares = 1,252 ÷ 100 = 12.52
with 15% waste = 12.52 × 1.15 = 14.40 → order 15 squares
bundles = 15 × 3 = 45 bundles of asphalt shingles

Practical tips

Tips for ordering roofing materials

Quantity is only part of a roofing order. Getting the waste factor right, knowing your bundle count, and ordering from a single production run all prevent costly re-orders once the job is underway.

  • Use 10% waste for a simple gable roof — two planes, no valleys, no dormers. Increase to 15% for hip roofs and to 20% for complex rooflines with dormers, multiple ridges, or skylights. When in doubt, round up by a full square.
  • Verify bundles per square on the wrapper — standard three-tab and architectural shingles ship 3 bundles per square (≈ 33.3 sq ft each). Some premium heavyweight or designer shingles ship 4 bundles per square; always confirm before multiplying.
  • Buy from a single production run — shingle color and surface texture shift between manufacturing batches. Order everything at once and confirm dye-lot numbers match across all pallets when additional material arrives.
  • Measure footprint from the ground, not from the roof — determine the pitch from the rake fascia using a level and tape, look up the multiplier, and calculate before anyone sets foot on the roof. This avoids unnecessary exposure before materials are on hand.
  • Budget one extra square for starter strips and ridge cap — starter course shingles and hip/ridge cap shingles consume material not counted in the main shingle estimate. Most estimators add one full square to cover these details on a standard gable, more on a hip roof.

Accuracy and limitations

The pitch multiplier method is the NRCA-recommended estimation approach and is accurate for simple gable and hip roofs where the entire roof surface shares a single pitch. It does not account for mansard, gambrel, or mixed-pitch designs. For those, measure each roof plane separately, apply the correct multiplier to each plane's footprint contribution, and sum the results.

This calculator estimates shingles only. A complete roofing job also requires underlayment, starter strips, ridge cap, drip edge, ice-and-water barrier (in cold climates), and flashing at walls, chimneys, and penetrations — none of which are included here. Material costs vary significantly by region, shingle grade, and supplier; always get a supplier quote before committing to an order. For complex or high-slope roofs, verify quantities with a licensed roofing contractor.

Roofing terms defined

The standard roofing unit: 100 square feet of finished roof surface. All shingle quantities, contractor quotes, and material orders are expressed in squares.
The steepness of a roof expressed as inches of rise per 12 inches of horizontal run. A 6/12 pitch rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of run — about 26.6 degrees from horizontal.
A factor that converts horizontal footprint area to true sloped roof area. Calculated as √(1 + (rise/12)²). A perfectly flat roof has a multiplier of 1.000; a 12/12 pitch has a multiplier of 1.414.
