About insurance calculators

Insurance and protection calculators answer one underlying question: if the worst happens, is there enough money in place — and what does it cost to get there? These tools turn that anxiety into figures. They size the life cover your family would need, the disability income gap if you couldn't work, the long-term-care bill years from now, and the tax-advantaged savings an HSA or annuity can build, using the same methods advisers and insurers use.

The core tools cover the big decisions. A life insurance calculator sizes coverage with the DIME method (debt, income, mortgage, education), backed by a fuller needs analysis and a human life value estimate; a disability insurance tool finds the monthly gap your existing coverage leaves; and long-term-care planners project the cost of future care. On the savings side, a family of HSA calculators and annuity tools model tax-advantaged growth and guaranteed income, while an actual cash value tool values property claims.

Each page explains the method and cites its source — the DIME and human-life-value frameworks for coverage, the IRS contribution limits for HSAs, and III/NAIC definitions for claims and policy types — then shows a worked example and the assumptions behind it. The arithmetic is exact for the numbers you enter, but coverage decisions are personal: treat every figure as a planning estimate to take to a licensed agent or fee-only adviser, not formal advice.

Questions

Insurance calculators — frequently asked questions

How much life insurance do I actually need?
A common starting point is the DIME method: add up your Debts, the Income your family would need to replace (annual income times the number of years), your remaining Mortgage, and future Education costs, then subtract existing coverage and liquid savings. The life insurance calculator runs this for you. Many advisers also sanity-check it against a simple 10–12× annual income rule of thumb.
What is the difference between term and whole life insurance?
Term insurance covers you for a set period (10, 20, or 30 years) and pays out only if you die during that term — it is far cheaper and is what most families need to cover working years, a mortgage, and children. Whole (permanent) life lasts your whole life and builds cash value, but costs several times more for the same death benefit. Sizing the coverage first, with these calculators, tells you how much protection your budget needs to buy.
Why is an HSA considered so tax-advantaged?
A Health Savings Account is triple-tax-advantaged: contributions are tax-deductible, the balance grows tax-free, and withdrawals for qualified medical expenses are tax-free too — no other account offers all three. You must be enrolled in a qualifying high-deductible health plan to contribute, up to the annual IRS limit. The HSA calculators project that growth and the tax you save.
What is the difference between actual cash value and replacement cost?
Actual cash value (ACV) pays what an item is worth today — its replacement cost minus depreciation for age and wear — so an older item pays out well below the price of a new one. Replacement cost value (RCV) pays the full cost of a new equivalent with no depreciation deducted. ACV policies are cheaper; RCV policies cost more but pay more on a claim. The actual cash value calculator shows the gap.
Are these insurance calculators a substitute for an agent's quote?
No. They are planning tools that show how much coverage or savings the standard methods suggest, using the numbers you enter. Your actual premium, eligibility, and policy terms depend on your age, health, location, and the underwriting of the specific insurer. Use these figures to walk into a conversation with a licensed agent or fee-only adviser already knowing roughly what you need.
