What the birthday calculator does
This birthday calculator counts the days until your next birthday and tells you what day of the week that birthday lands on. Enter your date of birth and it works out the next time your birthday comes around, then counts the days between today and that date — answering "how many days until my birthday" instantly.
It is built for the simplest version of the question: not how old you are, but how long you have to wait. If your birthday this year has already passed, the countdown automatically rolls forward to next year's birthday, so the number you see is always the days until the very next celebration.
How the birthday countdown is calculated
The calculation is short and follows a fixed order. The first rule that applies decides which year's birthday you are counting toward:
- Take your birthday in the current year. Keep your month and day, but set the year to this year.
- Has it already happened? If that date is in the past, move it forward to next year. If it is today or still ahead, leave it.
- Count the days. Subtract today's date from that next-birthday date to get the number of days remaining.
- Read the weekday. Work out which day of the week the next-birthday date falls on.

A worked example: days until a 15 June birthday
Sam was born on 15 June 1990 and wants to know how long until the next birthday. We anchor the example to the reference date 1 June 2026 so every number is reproducible. (The live calculator counts from today's real date instead.)
Step 1 — Put the birthday in the current year
Keep the 15 June and set the year to 2026, giving a candidate date of 15 June 2026.
Step 2 — Check whether it has passed
Today in the example is 1 June 2026, and 15 June 2026 is still ahead, so it does not roll forward. The next birthday is 15 June 2026.
Step 3 — Count the days and read the weekday
From 1 June to 15 June is 14 days. Checking the calendar, 15 June 2026 is a Monday. That matches the calculator exactly.
Now flip it: someone born on 10 March, counted from the same 1 June 2026, has already had their birthday this year. The countdown rolls forward to 10 March 2027 — 282 days away, a Wednesday.
What day of the week is your birthday on?
Alongside the countdown, the calculator shows the weekday of your next birthday — handy for knowing whether it lands on a weekend before you plan anything. The weekday is fixed by the date itself: every calendar date falls on exactly one day of the week, found with standard date arithmetic (the same idea behind methods like Zeller's congruence and the Doomsday algorithm).
There is a simple pattern to it. A given date shifts forward one weekday each year — because 365 days is 52 weeks plus 1 extra day — and shifts forward by two when a 29 February falls in between, because a leap year adds 366 days (52 weeks plus 2). That is why your birthday rarely repeats the same weekday two years running, and why the gap is sometimes one day and sometimes two.

Each year the date moves forward one weekday, except across a leap year (2028) where it jumps two. The same pattern applies to any fixed birthday date.

Why the number changes every day
The live calculator counts from today's real date, so the number drops by one each day as your birthday approaches. On your birthday itself the countdown reads 0 days; the day after, it resets to the days until next year's birthday.
- Birthday already passed this year? The countdown automatically points at next year's date, so you always see a future number.
