How the income tax calculator works
The US federal income tax uses a progressive bracket system — each dollar of taxable income is taxed only at the rate that applies to that slice, not your highest rate on every dollar. The calculation starts with your gross income, subtracts above-the-line adjustments to reach Adjusted Gross Income (AGI), then subtracts either the standard deduction or your itemized deductions to reach taxable income. That taxable income is then run through the seven brackets to produce your tax liability.
Worked example: Single filer earning $85,000
A single taxpayer earns $85,000 in W-2 wages with no above-the-line adjustments. They take the 2024 standard deduction of $14,600, leaving taxable income of $70,400.
2024 federal income tax brackets
The IRS adjusts bracket thresholds annually for inflation. These are the official 2024 tax year brackets (for returns filed in 2025). MFJ thresholds are approximately double the single thresholds for the lower five brackets, partially closing the 'marriage penalty' at the top.
| Rate | Single — Taxable Income | Married Filing Jointly |
|---|---|---|
| 10% | $0 – $11,600 | $0 – $23,200 |
| 12% | $11,601 – $47,150 | $23,201 – $94,300 |
| 22% | $47,151 – $100,525 | $94,301 – $201,050 |
| 24% | $100,526 – $191,950 | $201,051 – $383,900 |
| 32% | $191,951 – $243,725 | $383,901 – $487,450 |
| 35% | $243,726 – $609,350 | $487,451 – $731,200 |
| 37% | Over $609,350 | Over $731,200 |

Tips for lowering your federal income tax
Your tax bill is determined by taxable income — not gross income. Several legal strategies reduce taxable income before the brackets are applied, which can push you into a lower marginal bracket and reduce what you owe.
- Maximize pre-tax retirement contributions — 401(k) contributions (up to $23,000 in 2024, $30,500 if age 50+) reduce your AGI dollar-for-dollar and keep that money out of your taxable income entirely.
- Contribute to an HSA — Health Savings Account contributions ($4,150 single / $8,300 family in 2024) are deductible above-the-line and reduce AGI before you even reach the standard deduction calculation.
- Compare standard vs. itemized deductions — Itemizing makes sense if your mortgage interest, state/local taxes (SALT, capped at $10,000), and charitable donations exceed your standard deduction. Run both scenarios.
- Time capital gains and losses — Long-term capital gains (assets held over 12 months) are taxed at 0%, 15%, or 20% — not at ordinary income rates. Harvesting capital losses can offset gains dollar-for-dollar.
- Check your withholding after life changes — Marriage, a new child, a second job, or a large raise can all shift your bracket mid-year. Use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator after any major change to avoid a surprise balance due in April.
Accuracy and limitations
This calculator computes regular federal income tax liability using the 2024 tax year brackets and standard deductions. It does not calculate self-employment tax (15.3% on net self-employment income), the Net Investment Income Tax (3.8% on investment income above certain thresholds), the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT), or the Qualified Business Income (QBI) deduction available to eligible pass-through business owners.
State income taxes, local income taxes, and tax credits (such as the Child Tax Credit, Earned Income Credit, or American Opportunity Credit) are also outside the scope of this tool. The result is a close estimate for most W-2 employees who take the standard deduction, but individuals with complex tax situations — stock options, rental income, business income, or significant capital gains — should use professional tax software or consult a CPA or enrolled agent.
