The method

How the days alive calculator works

The count is a straight date subtraction. The calculator takes the moment of your birth date and the moment of today, measures the gap between them, and converts that gap into whole days:

days alive = whole days between (date of birth) and (today)
= floor( |today birth date| ÷ one day )
one day = 24 hours = 1,440 minutes = 86,400 seconds

Because the maths is a direct day-by-day count, leap years take care of themselves — every 29 February you have lived through is one of the days being counted. There is no need to multiply by an average year length; the calculator simply walks the real calendar.

Example: born 1 June 1990

Take someone born on 1 June 1990 and ask how many days they have been alive as of 1 June 2026. Here is exactly how the calculator gets to its answer.

Step 1 — Set the start and end dates

Birth date is 1 June 1990; the end date is today, here fixed at 1 June 2026. That is a span of exactly 36 calendar years — birthday to birthday — with nine leap days (1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, 2024) falling inside it.

Step 2 — Count the whole days in the span

Thirty-six years contain 36 × 365 = 13,140 ordinary days, plus the nine leap days, giving 13,149 days. The calculator measures this directly from the dates rather than year-by-year, but the totals agree.

Hours and minutes scale exactly because every day has exactly 24 hours and 1,440 minutes. Weeks divide cleanly into 7-day blocks with a remainder. Months and years use average lengths (a calendar month averages about 30.44 days, a year about 365.2425), so treat those two rows as approximations.

Why leap years make the count exact

A common worry is whether leap years throw the count off. They do not — and that is precisely the point of counting actual days rather than estimating from years. Every 29 February you have lived through is a genuine calendar day that the subtraction already includes.

Estimating instead — say, multiplying your age in years by 365 — undercounts, because it ignores leap days. The Gregorian calendar adds a leap day in most years divisible by 4, making the average year 365.2425 days long, not a flat 365. Over 36 years that's the difference between 13,140 (estimate) and the true 13,149 days.
