Grams measure mass; cups measure volume. To go from grams to cups, the calculator divides the gram amount by the ingredient's density expressed in grams per cup. Because that density differs dramatically between ingredients — cocoa powder is less than half as dense as granulated sugar — you must select the specific ingredient for the result to be meaningful.

Worked example: scaling a focaccia recipe

Example: 500 g of bread flour, no scale on the road

A baker has memorised a focaccia recipe in grams — it uses 500 g of bread flour. They are making it in a kitchen with only cup measures. Bread flour's King Arthur density is 120 g per cup.

Step 1 — Divide by the density

cups = 500 g ÷ 120 g/cup
cups = 4.167

Step 2 — Convert the decimal to tablespoons

0.167 cups × 16 tbsp/cup = 2.67 tbsp → 2 tablespoons + 2 teaspoons. The practical total is 4 cups + 2 tbsp + 2 tsp, measured by the spoon-and-level method.

Practical tips

Tips for converting grams to cups

Going from grams to cups is the less precise direction of this conversion — the gram amount is exact, but a cup is only as accurate as how you fill it.

  • Spoon and level every cup — the density table assumes spooned-and-leveled flour. Scooping packs 20–30 g extra per cup, so your cup count will undershoot the gram target.
  • Convert the decimal remainder to tablespoons — multiply the fraction by 16 (e.g. 0.25 cups × 16 = 4 tbsp). If the result is not a whole tablespoon, multiply the remainder by 3 to get teaspoons.
  • For honey and thick syrups, oil the cup first — a thin film of neutral oil lets sticky ingredients slide out cleanly and gives a more accurate fill.
  • Butter conversions are easy with wrapper markings — US butter sticks are labelled in tablespoons. 227 g (1 cup) = 2 sticks; 113 g (½ cup) = 1 stick.
  • Prefer grams for professional recipes — if you received the recipe in grams, cook it in grams. Converting back to cups and then measuring by cup introduces two layers of error.
