A teaspoon measures volume, not weight. To convert grams to teaspoons you must know how densely that ingredient packs a teaspoon-sized space. Fine table salt packs more than four times as densely as ground cinnamon, so the same gram weight occupies a completely different number of teaspoons. Tips for accurate teaspoon measurement

Teaspoons are the smallest standard measure in a recipe, which means errors have an outsized effect on flavour and leavening. A few habits make volume measurement almost as reliable as weighing.

  • Always level dry ingredients — dip the teaspoon into the jar, mound the ingredient slightly, then sweep a straight knife or offset spatula across the rim. A heaped teaspoon of baking powder can be 20–30% more than a level one — enough to over-leaven and collapse a cake.
  • Never shake the spoon to settle — tapping or shaking compacts the ingredient and effectively packs it, raising the gram weight beyond the level-teaspoon density used in this table.
  • Salt type is critical — table salt (5.7 g/tsp), Diamond Crystal kosher (2.8 g/tsp), and Morton kosher (4.8 g/tsp) are not interchangeable teaspoon for teaspoon. Always identify which salt the recipe intends before converting.
  • Yeast packets are pre-weighed, not pre-measured — a standard US yeast packet contains 7 g (about 2¼ tsp of instant yeast). Use the weight when halving or scaling to avoid buying a packet for a fraction of a teaspoon.
  • Vanilla extract pours more easily than it measures — use a dropper or measure into a spoon over a bowl rather than over the batter. Vanilla's density (4.2 g/tsp) is close to water, so the gram-to-teaspoon conversion is nearly 1:1 with water tables.

Density values for dry ingredients are averages from controlled measurements; actual density in your kitchen can vary by ±10–15% depending on humidity, how the ingredient was stored, and how finely it was ground. Baking soda is notably hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture from the air and can clump, raising its effective density per teaspoon. Sift or stir before measuring to get a consistent result.

For leavening agents — baking powder, baking soda, yeast — the quantity matters chemically, not just for flavour. A 10% error in a teaspoon measure can change the rise meaningfully. When precision is important, use a digital scale set to 0.1 g resolution rather than a teaspoon. This converter is best used for quick scaling checks, ingredient substitution estimates, and situations where a scale is unavailable.

A unit of volume equal to ⅓ tablespoon, or approximately 4.929 mL by NIST definition. Not to be confused with the metric teaspoon (5 mL exactly) used in Australian and some UK recipes, or the UK teaspoon (~5.9 mL in older recipes).
An ingredient (baking powder, baking soda, yeast) that produces gas to make baked goods rise. Quantity matters chemically — too little leaves baked goods dense; too much causes rapid rise followed by collapse and can leave a bitter or soapy taste.
Table salt is finely ground with anti-caking agents, giving roughly 5.7 g per teaspoon. Kosher salt has larger, irregular crystals that pack loosely: Diamond Crystal ≈ 2.8 g/tsp, Morton ≈ 4.8 g/tsp. They are not interchangeable by volume.
A fine-granule dry yeast (also called rapid-rise or bread machine yeast) that activates without pre-proofing. Density is approximately 3.1 g per teaspoon. Active dry yeast is coarser and slightly less dense; fresh (cake) yeast is much denser.
Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate, 6 g/tsp) is a base that needs an acid in the recipe to activate. Baking powder (4.6 g/tsp) contains both the base and the acid, so it works with any liquid. They are not interchangeable without adjusting the recipe.
A measuring spoon filled to the brim and then levelled flat with a straight edge. This is the standard assumed by virtually every recipe and by the density values in this calculator. A heaped or rounded measure is intentionally more than a level measure.
