How the tablespoons-to-teaspoons calculator works
The tablespoon-to-teaspoon ratio is one of the most fundamental ratios in US recipe writing: exactly 3 teaspoons make 1 tablespoon. This is a definition, not a measurement — it holds for every ingredient, liquid or dry, with perfect accuracy. There is no density factor and no rounding error. The only complication arises when mixing US and metric or Imperial tablespoons, which are slightly different sizes.
Worked example: scaling a spice rub
A competition-style BBQ rub calls for 4 tablespoons of smoked paprika, but you only have a teaspoon measure. How many teaspoons do you need, and how many millilitres is that?
Tablespoons to teaspoons and millilitres
The table below shows the most common tablespoon measurements in US recipes, including fractional tablespoons that appear in spice and leavening quantities. mL values are rounded to two decimal places.
| Tablespoons | Teaspoons | mL |
|---|---|---|
| ½ | 1½ | 7.39 |
| 1 | 3 | 14.79 |
| 2 | 6 | 29.57 |
| 3 | 9 | 44.36 |
| 4 | 12 | 59.15 |
| 6 | 18 | 88.72 |
| 8 | 24 | 118.29 |
| 16 | 48 | 236.59 |
Source: FDA 21 CFR §101.9; NIST SP 811. 1 US tablespoon = 14.787 mL exactly. 16 tablespoons = 1 US cup = 236.588 mL. Note: Australian metric tablespoon = 20 mL (4 metric tsp), not 14.787 mL.
Tips for tablespoon and teaspoon measurements
The 3:1 ratio is simple, but tablespoon measures trip up cooks in a few consistent ways — especially when scaling spice recipes up or down.
- Know the cup-to-tablespoon chain — 1 cup = 16 tablespoons = 48 teaspoons. When a recipe halves to ½ cup, that is 8 tablespoons or 24 teaspoons. The chain matters when you don't own every size of measuring spoon.
- Level spoons for baking, heaped for cooking — Baking recipes that call for baking powder, baking soda, salt or spices assume level tablespoons (the spoon filled to the rim and swept flat). Heaping adds 20–50% more and will throw off leavening ratios. Cooking recipes often say "rounded" or "heaped" — match the description in the recipe.
- Australian tablespoons are bigger — The Australian metric tablespoon is 20 mL (4 metric teaspoons), not the US/UK 14.79 mL (3 teaspoons). An Australian recipe calling for 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract means about 1⅓ US tablespoons. This difference matters most for spices and leavening.
- Use a tablespoon measure for oils, not a teaspoon — Pouring 3 teaspoons of olive oil is slow and messy. One tablespoon poured into the pan is cleaner and identical. The only time to use teaspoons for oil is sub-tablespoon quantities.
- Tablespoon shorthand: 1 T or 1 Tbsp — US recipes abbreviate tablespoon as T, Tbsp or tbsp. Teaspoon is t, tsp or tsp. The capital/lowercase distinction matters: 1 T ≠ 1 t. When typeface is unclear, context (salt vs vanilla) usually resolves it.
Accuracy and limitations
The 3:1 ratio between US tablespoons and US teaspoons is an exact definition — there is no rounding. The millilitre conversion (× 14.787) is the unrounded FDA/NIST definition for 1 US tablespoon. Results displayed by the calculator are rounded to two decimal places for readability.
This calculator uses US customary tablespoons and teaspoons. Australian metric tablespoons (20 mL) and traditional UK tablespoons (≈ 17.76 mL) are different sizes. If you are working with a recipe that specifies metric or UK tablespoons, use the mL column and convert using your local tablespoon size to avoid errors in spice and leavening ratios.
