Overview

What the time until retirement calculator does

The time until retirement calculator tells you how long until you retire — in years and in days — by counting forward from today to the date you reach a target retirement age. Enter your date of birth and the age you plan to retire, and it returns the countdown instantly.

It answers the everyday question "how many years until I retire?" without any financial planning. There is no money in this tool at all: it does not estimate savings, pensions, or benefits. It is a pure calendar countdown — your birthday plus your chosen retirement age gives a target date, and the calculator measures the gap between that date and now.

The day you were born. Combined with your target age, it fixes your retirement date.
The age, in whole years, at which you plan to stop working. You choose this — common targets are 60, 62, 65, 67, and 70.
Your DOB shifted forward by your retirement age. For a DOB of 1 Jan 1980 and age 65, that is 1 Jan 2045.
The number of days (and the equivalent years) from today until your retirement date.
The method

How to calculate the time until you retire

The calculation is two short steps: find the retirement date, then count the days from today to that date. The calculator does both for you, but the logic is easy to follow by hand.

  1. Find your retirement date. Take your date of birth and add your retirement age in whole years. A DOB of 1 January 1980 plus 65 years lands on 1 January 2045.
  2. Count the days from today. Subtract today's date from the retirement date to get the number of whole days remaining.
  3. Convert to years. Divide the days by 365.25 — the average length of a year once leap years are included — to express the countdown in years.
retirement date = date of birth + retirement age (years)
days remaining = retirement date today (whole days)
years remaining = days remaining ÷ 365.25

Because the count is anchored to today, the answer ticks down by one day every day. The worked example below uses a fixed reference date so the numbers are reproducible; the live tool always counts from the current date.

Worked example

A worked example: how long until I retire at 65?

Example: born 1 Jan 1980, retiring at 65

Sam was born on 1 January 1980 and plans to retire at 65. Counting from a reference date of 1 June 2026, here is exactly how the calculator works it out.

Step 1 — Find the retirement date

Add 65 years to the date of birth: 1 January 1980 + 65 = 1 January 2045. That is the day Sam turns 65 and the target for the countdown.

Step 2 — Count the days from today

From the reference date of 1 June 2026 to 1 January 2045 is 6,789 whole days. The calculator counts complete days, so it never rounds up past the target date.

Step 3 — Convert the days to years

Divide by 365.25: 6,789 ÷ 365.25 = 18.6 years (to one decimal place). So Sam has about 18.6 years, or 6,789 days, until retirement.

18.6 years — 6,789 days until retirement
DOB 1 Jan 1980, retiring at 65, counted from 1 Jun 2026. Retirement date: 1 January 2045. The live calculator counts from today, so your figure will differ.
Reference

Years until retirement at different target ages

Your target age is the single biggest lever on the countdown — pushing retirement later adds years, pulling it earlier removes them. The table below keeps the same date of birth (1 January 1980) and reference date (1 June 2026) as the worked example, and varies only the target age, so you can see how the gap changes.

Target ageRetirement dateDays remainingYears remaining
601 Jan 20404,96213.6
621 Jan 20425,69315.6
651 Jan 20456,78918.6
671 Jan 20477,51920.6
701 Jan 20508,61523.6

Same DOB (1 Jan 1980) and reference date (1 Jun 2026); only the target age changes. Each extra year of working age adds roughly 365–366 days to the countdown.

Ages 60, 62, 65, 67, and 70 are the figures people most often compare because they line up with common pension and benefit milestones. To pick a target with confidence, the next section explains the "full retirement age" context — used here purely to choose a number, not as financial advice.

Context

Choosing a target retirement age (full retirement age explained)

There is no single "correct" retirement age — you enter whatever target you want. But many people anchor their target to their full retirement age (FRA), the age set by the U.S. Social Security Administration at which retirement benefits are not reduced for claiming early.

  • Born 1943–1954: full retirement age is 66.
  • Born 1955–1959: full retirement age rises in two-month steps, from 66 and 2 months up to 66 and 10 months.
  • Born 1960 or later: full retirement age is 67.
This is context for picking a target age only. The calculator just counts days to whatever age you choose — it does not estimate benefit amounts, savings, or income, and nothing here is financial advice. Always confirm your own full retirement age with the Social Security Administration.

Once you have a target age in mind, this tool answers the timing question — "how many years until I retire?" Pair it with the age calculator to confirm your current age, or the countdown to a date calculator to track any specific future day.

Details

How the countdown handles days, leap years, and the target date

The countdown is a calendar-day count, not a working-day count — every day between now and your retirement date is included, weekends and holidays alike. If you want only working days, that is a separate calculation.

  • Leap years are handled automatically. The day count spans real calendar dates, so any 29 February between now and your retirement date is included. Dividing by 365.25 keeps the years figure accurate across long spans.
  • Whole days only. The result is the number of complete days remaining; partial days are not rounded up past the target.
  • A past target shows zero. If your DOB plus your chosen age is already behind today, the countdown reads 0 days rather than a negative number.

To count the exact days between any two arbitrary dates instead of a retirement target, use the days between dates calculator. For a full list of everyday date and time tools, see the everyday calculators shelf.

Quick answers

Common time until retirement questions

How do I calculate how long until I retire?

Add your retirement age to your date of birth to get your retirement date, then count the days from today to that date. Dividing the days by 365.25 gives the figure in years. The calculator does all of this for you the moment you enter your date of birth and target age.

Does the countdown change every day?

Yes. Because it counts from today, the number of days remaining drops by one each day. The worked example on this page uses a fixed reference date so the numbers stay reproducible, but the live tool always measures from the current date.

Why divide by 365.25 instead of 365?

365.25 is the average length of a calendar year once leap years are counted (one extra day roughly every four years). Using it to convert days into years keeps the years figure accurate over long spans, where whole leap days would otherwise add up.

Does this calculator give financial or benefit advice?

No. It is purely a date countdown — it tells you how much time remains until a target retirement age. It does not estimate savings, pensions, or Social Security benefits, and nothing here is financial advice. For benefit questions, check with the Social Security Administration or a qualified adviser.

Methodology

How this calculator works and sources

This time until retirement calculator builds your retirement date by adding your chosen age to your date of birth, then counts whole calendar days from today to that date and divides by 365.25 to express the result in years. The maths is plain date arithmetic run entirely in your browser — no data is sent anywhere. The full-retirement-age figures cited above are published by the U.S. Social Security Administration and are included only as context for choosing a target age, not as financial advice.
