How the market value of bonds calculator works

The market value of a bond is the present value of all its remaining cash flows — coupon payments and the final principal repayment — discounted at the current market yield rather than the bond's original coupon rate. As market interest rates change, the market value diverges from the bond's par (face) value, creating premium or discount pricing.

This is the same present-value formula used in bond pricing. The key insight is that the market yield — not the coupon rate — drives the discount rate. When the Federal Reserve raises rates or credit spreads widen, all outstanding bonds see their market values fall to compensate buyers for the lower relative yield.

Market value = C × [1 (1 + r)^n] / r + F / (1 + r)^n
where: C = periodic coupon payment
r = current market yield per period
n = periods remaining to maturity
F = face (par) value

Example

Worked example: 6% coupon bond when market yields rise to 7%

Example: $1,000 par, 6% coupon, 10 years — yield rises from 6% to 7%

Morgan holds a $1,000 par bond originally issued at 6% coupon with 10 years remaining. Market interest rates have risen and comparable bonds now yield 7%. Morgan wants to sell — but the bond must now be priced at a discount to make the 6% coupon competitive with the 7% market rate.

Coupon annuity = $60 × [1 (1.07)^10] / 0.07
= $60 × 7.0236 = $421.42
PV of face = $1,000 / (1.07)^10 = $508.35
Market value = $421.42 + $508.35 = $929.77

A 1% rise in market yield pushed the bond $70 below par. The buyer earns a 7% total return by receiving the $60 coupon plus the $70.23 discount that accretes back to $1,000 at maturity.

Tips for understanding bond market values

Market value fluctuations are normal for bonds held before maturity. Understanding why values move — and by how much — helps you make better decisions about when to hold, sell, or buy.

  • Maturity length amplifies rate sensitivity — A 30-year bond loses far more market value for a given yield rise than a 2-year bond. If you anticipate rising rates, shorter maturities preserve capital better at the cost of lower income.
  • Discount bonds offer tax advantages in some accounts — When a discount bond accretes to par, the gain may be treated as ordinary income rather than capital gains. Verify the tax treatment with your advisor before buying discount bonds in taxable accounts.
  • Check the 'dirty price' for settlement — The market value formula gives the 'clean price'. When you buy a bond between coupon dates you also pay accrued interest (the seller's share of the next coupon). Your total cash outlay is the dirty price.
  • Credit-quality changes affect market value independently of rates — If the issuer's credit rating is downgraded, the required yield rises and market value falls, even if benchmark interest rates are unchanged. Monitor issuer news, not just the Fed.
  • Holding to maturity eliminates market-value risk — If you hold a bond to maturity you receive the full face value regardless of interim price swings — assuming the issuer doesn't default. Market value only matters if you might sell early.

This calculator prices bonds using the standard present-value formula, which is exact for fixed-rate bonds with equal coupon periods priced on a coupon date. It does not compute accrued interest, handle fractional periods, model callable or convertible bonds, or apply day-count conventions (Actual/Actual, 30/360, etc.) that affect settlement prices on real markets. For official transaction pricing, use a broker-dealer quote or a Bloomberg/FactSet terminal that applies the correct day-count and settlement rules.

Key market-value terms

The current price a willing buyer would pay for the bond in the secondary market, reflecting today's interest rates and credit conditions rather than the original issue price.
The principal amount — typically $1,000 — repaid by the issuer at maturity. The coupon is a fixed percentage of par regardless of the bond's market price.
The quoted market price of a bond excluding accrued interest since the last coupon payment. This is what bond pricing formulas calculate.
The actual settlement price including accrued interest. Equals the clean price plus the coupon fraction earned by the seller since the last payment date.
