How the SIP calculator works
A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) lets you invest a fixed amount every month and benefit from dollar-cost averaging and compounding. The SIP calculator uses the future-value-of-annuity-due formula to project the total corpus (maturity value) you will accumulate from regular monthly contributions at a given annual return rate.
Worked example: $500/month at 12% annual for 10 years
You invest $500 every month for 10 years in an equity mutual fund earning an average annual return of 12%. What will your total corpus be at maturity?
SIP maturity values — monthly contributions at various rates and horizons
The table below shows the projected maturity value for monthly SIP amounts of $200, $500, and $1,000 at annual returns of 10%, 12%, and 15% over 5, 10, and 15 years.
| Monthly SIP | Rate | 5 Years | 10 Years | 15 Years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $200 | 10% | $15,617 | $41,307 | $83,573 |
| $200 | 12% | $16,497 | $46,468 | $100,914 |
| $200 | 15% | $17,938 | $55,724 | $135,368 |
| $500 | 10% | $39,043 | $103,267 | $208,933 |
| $500 | 12% | $41,243 | $116,170 | $252,285 |
| $500 | 15% | $44,845 | $139,310 | $338,420 |
| $1,000 | 10% | $78,085 | $206,534 | $417,866 |
| $1,000 | 12% | $82,486 | $232,340 | $504,570 |
| $1,000 | 15% | $89,690 | $278,620 | $676,839 |

Tips for maximising your SIP returns
The discipline of regular investing — regardless of market conditions — is the SIP's greatest advantage. Here are five tips to make the most of it.
- Never pause your SIP during market downturns — buying more units at lower prices during dips is precisely how SIP generates above-average long-run returns through rupee/dollar cost averaging.
- Increase your SIP amount annually — a step-up SIP that raises contributions by even 10% per year can dramatically boost your corpus without feeling the pinch all at once.
- Start early and let compounding do the heavy lifting — a $200/month SIP at 12% for 20 years ($48,000 invested) grows to roughly $230,000; starting 10 years later requires double the contribution to match it.
- Choose funds with low expense ratios — a 0.5% reduction in annual fees compounds into a meaningfully larger corpus over a 10–15 year horizon.
- Link SIP to a long-term goal — tying each SIP to a specific target (retirement, college fund, home down-payment) makes it easier to stay invested through volatility.
Accuracy and limitations
This calculator assumes a constant annual return rate and fixed monthly contributions made at the start of each month (annuity-due). Actual mutual fund returns fluctuate based on market conditions; NAV-based SIPs may allocate fractional units differently than the formula suggests. The projection excludes exit loads, capital gains taxes, inflation, and fund expense ratios — all of which reduce the real maturity value.
The return rate used should reflect the expected long-run average after fees. For equity mutual funds, a 10–12% assumption is commonly used in planning illustrations, but conservative planners use 8–9% to account for periods of underperformance.
