Conception is the moment a sperm fertilizes an egg, creating the single cell a pregnancy grows from. It happens in the fallopian tube, almost always within a day of ovulation — the release of a mature egg from the ovary. This conception calculator estimates the date that fertilization most likely occurred from the one piece of information most people can recall: the first day of their last menstrual period (LMP).

Because conception is an internal event with no outward sign, you almost never know the exact day it happened. What the calculator gives you is a well-grounded estimate built on how a typical cycle works: in an average 28-day cycle, ovulation falls around day 14, and conception falls with it. The tool deliberately keeps the input to one field — your LMP — because that is the date almost everyone knows. It does not ask for cycle length, so if your cycles run much shorter or longer than 28 days, read the result as a centre point and shift it the same number of days your ovulation differs from day 14 (the section on accuracy below explains how). How is a conception date estimated?

A conception date is reverse-engineered from your cycle, not observed directly. The logic runs in two short steps: first find ovulation, then place conception on it. In a 28-day cycle, ovulation sits about 14 days after the period starts, and because a released egg only survives 12 to 24 hours, fertilization happens at essentially the same time. So conception is dated to that ovulation day.

There is a subtlety worth knowing: the day you conceived and the day you had sex are not always the same. Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to five days, so intercourse earlier in your fertile window can lead to conception days later, once the egg is finally released. The calculator estimates the conception (fertilization) day — tied to ovulation — rather than the day of intercourse.

A worked example using the conception calculator

Example: last period began January 1

Sofia's last period started on January 1 and her cycles run a typical 28 days. She wants to estimate when she conceived. Here is the arithmetic the calculator runs.

  1. Enter the last menstrual period. Sofia types January 1 into the single date field — the first day of her last period.
  2. The calculator finds ovulation. In a 28-day cycle ovulation lands on about cycle day 14, which is January 15 (14 days after January 1).
  3. Conception is placed on ovulation. Because the egg is only fertilizable for a day, conception is dated to that same day — January 15.

Three dates

Conception vs. implantation vs. LMP

Three dates get tangled together in early pregnancy, and they are genuinely different points on the timeline. Getting them straight explains why a doctor says you are 'further along' than the conception date alone would suggest.

  • LMP (day 0 of dating). The first day of your last period — about two weeks before you actually conceive. Pregnancies are dated from here by convention, even though you were not pregnant yet.
  • Conception (≈ LMP + 14 days). Fertilization at ovulation. This is what this calculator estimates and the true biological start of the pregnancy.
  • Implantation (≈ conception + 6 to 12 days). When the embryo attaches to the uterine lining and hCG — the hormone pregnancy tests detect — begins to rise. It comes about a week after conception, not at it.
This is why gestational age (counted from LMP) runs about two weeks ahead of the actual age of the embryo (counted from conception). At conception you are already considered '2 weeks pregnant.' The next section unpacks that gap.
Two clocks

Conception date and gestational age

Pregnancy is measured on two different clocks, and mixing them up is the most common source of confusion. Gestational age is counted from the first day of your last period; fetal (or conceptional) age is counted from conception itself. Because conception happens about two weeks after the LMP, gestational age is always roughly two weeks more than the embryo's true age.

due date = LMP + 280 days = conception + 266 days

So when a 28-day-cycle pregnancy is described as '8 weeks gestational,' the embryo is really about 6 weeks old since conception. Both numbers are correct — they just start their count at different events. Almost all clinical milestones, scans, and the due date are quoted in gestational weeks from the LMP.

Working backward

Estimating conception from a due date

The arithmetic runs in reverse just as easily. If you already have a due date — from an early ultrasound or your provider — you can estimate conception by counting backward, because a full term is about 266 days from conception (or 280 days from the LMP).

Working back from an early ultrasound due date is often the most reliable conception estimate of all, because a first-trimester scan dates the pregnancy directly from the embryo's size rather than from a remembered period. Honest limits

Can you know the exact day you conceived?

For most people, no — and that is normal. Conception is an internal event with no symptom you can feel, so the calculated date is always an estimate, not an observation. Two things in particular blur it.

  • Sperm outlive intercourse. Sperm can survive up to five days in the body, so you might have had sex on a Friday and not actually conceived until the egg arrived the following Monday. The day of intercourse and the day of conception are often different.
  • Ovulation timing varies. Few people ovulate exactly on cycle day 14. Stress, illness, and naturally short or long cycles shift it, which moves conception with it.
The exceptions are pregnancies from IVF or timed insemination, where the fertilization or transfer date is documented — those have a known conception date. For everyone else, treat the result as a best central estimate within a window of a few days.

A conception calculator gives a reasoned estimate, not a measurement. The LMP method it uses is the standard starting point in obstetrics, but it leans on assumptions that are not true for everyone, so the result is best read as the middle of a few-day range.

  • It assumes a 28-day cycle. The calculator places ovulation on day 14. If your cycle is shorter or longer, shift the estimate by the difference — a 24-day cycle conceives nearer LMP + 10, a 32-day cycle nearer LMP + 18.
  • It assumes you ovulate mid-cycle. Research suggests only about 10% of people ovulate exactly on day 14, so real conception can land several days either side of the estimate.
  • It depends on an accurate LMP. A misremembered or irregular last period shifts every downstream date with it.
  • An early ultrasound beats it. A first-trimester scan dates a pregnancy to within about ±5 to 7 days and is the gold standard; the LMP estimate is a convenient stand-in, not a replacement.
