The kilojoule is the official SI (metric) unit of energy, so countries that fully adopted the metric system put food energy in kilojoules on the label. Calorie vs calorie — kcal, Cal, and the small calorie
Here is a genuine source of confusion: the word “calorie” has two meanings. The small calorie (lowercase, symbol cal) is the energy to heat one gram of water by 1 °C — a tiny amount. The large Calorie (capital C, also written kcal or Cal) is 1,000 of those — the energy to heat one kilogram of water by 1 °C. Food energy is always the large one.
In everyday use, “calorie”, “Calorie”, “kcal”, and “cal” on food packaging all mean the same thing: the food Calorie. So when a label says 250 cal or 250 kcal or 250 Cal, it is one figure.
