What is waist-to-hip ratio?

Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is your waist circumference divided by your hip circumference — a single number that captures where your body stores fat rather than how much you weigh. A lower ratio means your measurements are more evenly distributed; a higher ratio means more of your bulk sits around the middle. How to measure your waist and hips

WHR is only as accurate as your tape work, and the two measurements go in different places — a common mistake is to measure the waist where trousers sit rather than at its narrowest point. Use a soft cloth tape, measure on bare skin, and stay relaxed.

  1. Waist. Measure around the narrowest part of your torso, roughly midway between the bottom of your ribs and the top of your hip bone — usually just above the belly button. Breathe out normally; don't suck in.
  2. Hips. Measure around the widest part of your hips and seat, with your feet together. This is the fullest point of the buttocks, not where a waistband sits.
  3. Keep the tape level. Make sure it is parallel to the floor all the way around — letting it ride up at the back is the most common error and inflates the result.
  4. Snug, not tight. The tape should sit flat against the skin without compressing it. Measure each twice and use the average.

  • Two measurements, two chances for error. A high WHR can come from a large waist or unusually narrow hips, and mis-measuring either one skews the result — measure carefully and consistently.
  • Large hips can mask a large waist. A genuinely large waist paired with very wide hips can still produce a 'low-risk' ratio, which is why some clinicians prefer waist circumference or waist-to-height alone.
  • It doesn't apply to everyone equally. The standard cut-offs are derived mainly from general adult populations and may not fit very muscular builds, pregnant people, or some ethnic groups whose risk thresholds differ.
