How the MPGe calculator works

MPGe — miles per gallon equivalent — is the EPA's standardized metric for comparing electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles to gasoline cars. It converts electric efficiency (mi/kWh) into a familiar mpg number by using the energy content of one gallon of gasoline as the conversion factor: 33.7 kilowatt-hours.

MPGe = mi/kWh × 33.7
mi/kWh = MPGe ÷ 33.7
Cost per mile ($) = Electricity rate ($/kWh) ÷ mi/kWh
Equivalent cost vs. gasoline = (Electricity rate × 33.7) ÷ Gas price

The 33.7 kWh/gallon figure lets you ask: 'What would gasoline cost if it were as efficient as my EV's electricity?' If you pay $0.16/kWh and gasoline contains 33.7 kWh, then a gasoline gallon's worth of electricity costs $0.16 × 33.7 = $5.39. If gas is $3.50/gallon, the electricity is 35% cheaper per equivalent unit of energy. For plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), the EPA issues two separate ratings — one MPGe for EV mode and a conventional mpg for gasoline mode.

Example: Lucid Air Grand Touring at 4.6 mi/kWh, $0.16/kWh vs. $3.50/gallon gas

The 2024 Lucid Air Grand Touring is EPA-rated at 4.6 mi/kWh. Convert to MPGe, calculate cost per mile, and compare to driving a 32-mpg gasoline sedan at $3.50/gallon.

MPGe = 4.6 × 33.7 = 155 MPGe

Tips for using MPGe to make smarter EV comparisons

MPGe is a useful comparison tool, but it has some important nuances. These tips help you use it accurately when shopping for or evaluating EVs.

  • MPGe compares energy, not cost — A 130 MPGe EV does not cost 3× less to operate than a 43-mpg Toyota Prius. The comparison is energy-equivalent. To compare actual costs, use electricity rate ÷ mi/kWh versus gas price ÷ mpg.
  • PHEVs have two separate ratings — A plug-in hybrid (e.g., Toyota RAV4 Prime) carries both an MPGe figure for EV mode and a conventional mpg for gasoline mode. The window sticker shows both, and neither alone tells the full story without knowing your typical driving range versus EV range.
  • Higher MPGe doesn't always mean longer range — A 155 MPGe Lucid Air with a 112 kWh battery goes farther than a 140 MPGe Ioniq 6 with a 74 kWh battery, even though the Ioniq 6 is more efficient per mile. Always check rated range alongside MPGe.
  • Use MPGe to compare across fuel types — MPGe makes it possible to directly compare hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCEVs), battery EVs (BEVs), plug-in hybrids, and even compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles all on a single scale.
  • Real-world efficiency often differs from EPA MPGe — Cold weather, high-speed highway driving, heavy payload, and aggressive acceleration all reduce actual mi/kWh below the EPA figure. For realistic comparisons, use owner-reported community averages from sites like Fuelly or the EV Database alongside official EPA numbers.

Accuracy and limitations

The MPGe formula (mi/kWh × 33.7) is an exact mathematical conversion. The 33.7 kWh/gallon constant is defined by the EPA based on the lower heating value of gasoline and is not subject to variation. However, the real-world applicability of MPGe has known limitations: it measures tank-to-wheel energy only, does not account for electricity generation efficiency or the upstream energy cost of petroleum refining, and uses standardized lab conditions that may not match your actual driving.

For purchasing decisions, treat EPA MPGe as a reliable relative ranking tool — higher MPGe vehicles will almost always cost less to fuel per mile under similar conditions — rather than as a precise per-mile cost predictor. Your actual electricity rate, local gas prices, charging habits (home vs. public DC fast), and climate will all shift real-world results from the EPA benchmark. Miles per gallon equivalent — the EPA metric for expressing EV and PHEV efficiency in familiar mpg terms, using 33.7 kWh as the energy content of one gallon of gasoline.
