How the pints-to-cups calculator works
A US liquid pint is exactly 2 US cups, 16 US fluid ounces, or 473.176 mL. That fixed ratio makes the conversion a single multiplication — multiply any number of pints by 2 and you have the cup equivalent with no rounding required. The tricky part is making sure you start with the right pint, because the US pint and the UK (Imperial) pint are not the same size.
Worked example: scaling a soup recipe
A clam chowder recipe calls for 1½ US pints of chicken stock. Your measuring jug is marked in cups only. How many cups do you pour?

Tips for pints-to-cups conversions in the kitchen
Liquid volume conversions are among the easiest in cooking — the ratio is exact — but a handful of pitfalls catch even experienced cooks off guard.
- Check which pint your recipe uses — British, Irish and Australian recipes often call for Imperial pints (568 mL), not US pints (473 mL). One UK pint of cream is about 2.4 US cups, not 2.
- Use a liquid measuring cup, not a dry one — Dry measuring cups are meant to be levelled off and read slightly differently from glass jug-style liquid measures. For pints of stock, cream or juice, always pour into a clear jug with a spout.
- Don't confuse US dry pints with liquid pints — A US dry pint (used at farm stands for strawberries or blueberries) is about 2.33 cups by volume, but fresh berries are rarely weighed in volume for baking. When a US recipe says "a pint of blueberries," it means a dry-pint container, roughly 12 oz by weight.
- Know the chain: pints → cups → tablespoons — 1 US pint = 2 cups = 32 tablespoons = 96 teaspoons. Helpful when a recipe wants tablespoons and you only have a pint carton.
- Halving a pint is one cup exactly — No arithmetic needed. If you need half a pint, fill one standard 8-fl-oz measuring cup to the brim.
Accuracy and limitations
The US liquid pint-to-cup ratio is defined exactly as 2:1 by NIST, so the conversion itself carries zero rounding error. Millilitre results are rounded to one decimal place in the table above; unrounded they are 473.17647... mL per pint.
This calculator handles US liquid pints, US dry pints and Imperial (UK) pints. It does not handle the obsolete wine or ale pints, nor the Australian metric cup (250 mL vs the US 236.6 mL). If a recipe calls for an Australian or metric cup, the conversion factor from a US pint is 473.176 ÷ 250 = 1.893 metric cups per US pint.
