How the quarts-to-cups calculator works

One US liquid quart equals exactly 4 US cups, 2 US pints, or 32 US fluid ounces. That fixed 4:1 ratio means the conversion is always a single multiplication — multiply the number of quarts by 4 and you have cups. Like pints, there are three distinct quart sizes: US liquid, US dry and Imperial (UK), and they are not interchangeable.

Worked example: scaling a stock recipe

Example: a braise recipe that calls for 2½ quarts of beef stock

A short-rib braise recipe calls for 2½ US quarts of beef stock, but your measuring tools only go up to 4 cups. How many times do you fill that 4-cup measure, and what is the total in millilitres?

cups = 2.5 × 4 = 10 cups
mL = 2.5 × 946.353 = 2,365.9 mL ≈ 2.37 litres
10 cups / 2.37 litres
Two full 4-cup measures plus 2 more cups equals the 2½ quarts your recipe needs. For stovetop braising, a 2-litre carton plus ⅓ of another carton will do.

Tips for quarts-to-cups conversions in the kitchen

Quarts appear most often in soup, stock, brining and ice-cream recipes. These five tips cover the situations where the conversion most commonly trips cooks up.

  • Know the US carton sizes — US broth and stock cartons come in 32 fl oz (1 quart) and 48 fl oz (1½ quarts). A 32 oz carton is exactly 4 cups; a 48 oz carton is 6 cups. No measuring jug needed if your recipe calls for whole quarts.
  • A gallon is 4 quarts — The US measurement chain is: 1 gallon = 4 quarts = 8 pints = 16 cups = 128 fl oz. Knowing this chain means you can convert from any unit to any other in two steps.
  • Ice cream recipes often use quarts — A standard US ice-cream churn makes 1–2 quarts. When doubling a recipe from cups to quarts, remember that 1 qt = 4 cups, so a recipe yielding 8 cups already makes 2 quarts.
  • British recipes that say "quart" mean an Imperial quart — An Imperial quart (1,136.5 mL) is about 20% more liquid than a US quart (946.4 mL). That gap is the difference between a properly seasoned brine and an under-concentrated one.
  • Brine ratios scale by quart — A classic 5% salt brine is about 3 tablespoons of kosher salt per quart of water. If you need 3 quarts, use 9 tablespoons. Scaling the liquid volume in quarts keeps the arithmetic simple.

The US liquid quart-to-cup ratio is an exact 4:1 definition per NIST, so the conversion carries no rounding error. Millilitre figures in the table above are rounded to one decimal place; the unrounded definition is 1 US liquid quart = 946.352946... mL.

This calculator covers US liquid quarts, US dry quarts and Imperial quarts. It does not handle the obsolete wine quart. The Australian and Canadian metric cup is 250 mL (vs 236.6 mL for a US cup), so if you are converting for an Australian recipe, 1 US quart = 946.353 ÷ 250 = 3.785 metric cups, not 4 US cups.
