What the anniversary calculator tells you
The anniversary calculator answers the question couples ask most — "how long have we been together?" — and the one that matters next: how many days are left until your next anniversary. Enter your wedding date (or any start date), and it returns the full years you have completed together plus an exact countdown of days until the next anniversary rolls around.
It works for any relationship milestone: a wedding, the day you started dating, an engagement, or even a work anniversary. The maths is plain calendar arithmetic — the number of whole years from the start date to today, and the number of days from today to the next time that month-and-day comes around.
How the anniversary calculator counts years and days
The tool runs two simple calculations from your start date to today. Both use the real calendar, so leap years and varying month lengths are handled automatically.
- Years completed — count the whole years from your start date to today. If today's month-and-day has not yet reached your anniversary this year, the current year does not count yet.
- Next anniversary date — take your start date's month and day in the current year. If that date is already past, move it to next year.
- Days until next — count the days from today to that next anniversary date.

A worked example: married on 15 June 2010
Sam and Alex were married on 15 June 2010. They check the calculator on 1 June 2026. Here is exactly how the tool works through the two answers.
Step 1 — Count the whole years completed
From 15 June 2010 to 1 June 2026 is almost 16 years — but their anniversary, 15 June, has not yet arrived in 2026. So the last anniversary fully reached was 15 June 2025, which means they have completed 15 years of marriage so far.
Step 2 — Find the next anniversary date
The next anniversary is 15 June in the current year, 2026. Because 1 June 2026 has not yet reached 15 June 2026, that date is still ahead — so the next anniversary is 15 June 2026.
Step 3 — Count the days until then
From 1 June 2026 to 15 June 2026 is 14 days. That is the countdown the calculator shows.
Days until our anniversary
The countdown is the part couples come back for. Because the calculator measures from today to the next time your date comes around, the number shrinks by one each day until it reaches zero on the anniversary itself — then resets to a full year's worth of days the day after.
If your anniversary has already happened this year, the tool automatically looks ahead to next year, so you always see a forward-looking countdown rather than a negative number. A couple whose anniversary is 20 September, checked on 1 June 2026, would see 111 days until their next anniversary on 20 September 2026.

Each anniversary year has a traditional material or theme attached to it — the basis for the classic "by year" gift lists. The most famous milestones are the 1st (paper), 25th (silver), and 50th (gold). The table below lists the widely used traditional names from year 1 through year 70.

Traditional wedding anniversary names. US and UK lists differ slightly in the early years (e.g. year 4 is fruit & flowers in the US, linen in the UK); the milestone years — silver (25), gold (50), and diamond (60) — are the same everywhere. Years 65 and 70 are blue sapphire and platinum.
Linking an anniversary to a precious metal is old: pairing silver with 25 years and gold with 50 has been documented in Germanic countries since the 1500s, when a wife was crowned with a silver or gold wreath to mark the milestone.
Relationship, dating, and work anniversaries
An anniversary is just the yearly return of any meaningful date, so the same maths works whether you are counting from a wedding, a first date, an engagement, or a job start. The calculator does not care what the date represents — it counts whole years and the days to the next return either way.
- Wedding anniversary — years married, counted from the wedding date.
- Relationship / dating anniversary — "how long have we been together," counted from the day you became a couple.
- Engagement anniversary — years since you got engaged.
- Work anniversary — years of service, counted from your start date.

Common anniversary calculator questions
How do I calculate how long we have been together?
Enter the date you got married or started dating. The calculator counts the whole years from that date to today — that is your years completed. It also shows the days until your next anniversary so you have a live countdown.
Why does it say a different number of years than I expected?
It counts completed years, not the year you are currently in. If your anniversary has not happened yet this year, the current year does not count. A couple married in June 2010 has completed 15 years as of early June 2026 — they reach 16 years only once 15 June 2026 passes.
What is the 25th and 50th wedding anniversary called?
The 25th is the silver anniversary and the 50th is the gold anniversary — the two best-known milestones. The 1st is paper and the 60th is diamond.
Does the countdown update by itself?
Yes. The live tool measures from today's date, so the days-until-next figure decreases by one each day until your anniversary, then resets to a full year once the date passes.
