What the days until calculator does
The days until calculator tells you how many days are left from today until a future date you choose — a deadline, a holiday, a birthday, a wedding, an exam, or a product launch. Type a target date and it counts the days remaining instantly, with no sign-up and no waiting.
It answers the everyday question "how many days until…?" in a single number. Because the count is anchored to today, the answer ticks down by one each day until the date arrives — making it a simple countdown to any date on the calendar.
How to calculate the days until a date
Counting the days until a future date is a simple subtraction: take the target date and subtract today's date. The result is the number of whole days you still have to wait.
The calculator does this for you across month and year boundaries, so you never have to remember whether a month has 30 or 31 days, or whether February has 28 or 29. It also never returns a negative number: if you enter a date that has already passed, the count shows 0 rather than a minus sign, because there are no days left until a date in the past.
- Future date → the count is the number of days remaining.
- Today's date → the count is 0 (the day has arrived).
- Past date → the count is 0 (clamped; use the days between dates calculator to measure how long ago it was).
A worked example: how many days until 31 December?
Maya wants to know how many days she has until the year-end deadline of 31 December 2026, counting from 1 June 2026. Here is exactly how the calculator reaches its answer. (The live tool counts from today's real date; this example uses fixed dates so you can follow the maths.)
Step 1 — Set the two dates
Start (today) is 1 June 2026; the target is 31 December 2026. The target is later than today, so there is a real countdown to measure.
Step 2 — Add up the days in each month
Count the days remaining in June, then each full month through to the end date: 29 (rest of June) + 31 (July) + 31 (August) + 30 (September) + 31 (October) + 30 (November) + 31 (December) = 213 days.
Step 3 — Read the result
The calculator subtracts the dates and returns 213 days until 31 December 2026. Today (1 June) is not included in the total, and the target day itself is the day the count reaches zero.
Inclusive vs exclusive: does today count?
The most common confusion with any "days until" count is whether the start day and the end day are included. This calculator measures the gap between today and the target — an exclusive count — so today is not counted and the result is the number of nights, or sleeps, until the date.
An inclusive count, by contrast, would add one to include both the start and the end day. Neither answer is "wrong" — they answer slightly different questions. Use the exclusive count for "how many days do I have left to wait?"; add one if you need the total number of calendar days the event spans, including today.
| Question | Method | From 1 Jun to 5 Jun |
|---|---|---|
| How many days until? (days left to wait) | Exclusive — this tool | 4 |
| How many calendar days, today through the date? | Inclusive — add 1 | 5 |
The two counts always differ by exactly one. This calculator reports the exclusive "days remaining" figure.
Turning the day count into weeks and months
The calculator reports the answer in days, which is the most precise unit for a countdown. If you would rather think in weeks or months, convert the day count with the rough guides below — useful for planning when something is still a way off.
| Days until | ≈ Weeks | ≈ Months |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 1 | 0.2 |
| 30 | 4.3 | 1.0 |
| 90 | 12.9 | 3.0 |
| 180 | 25.7 | 5.9 |
| 213 | 30.4 | 7.0 |
| 365 | 52.1 | 12.0 |

Common things people count down to
A days-until count is handy any time you want a clear, single number for how long is left. Common targets include:
- Holidays and seasons — Christmas, New Year, summer break, a long weekend.
- Personal milestones — a birthday, wedding, anniversary, or graduation.
- Deadlines — a project due date, a tax filing date, an application cut-off.
- Trips and events — a flight, a concert, a vacation start date.
- Launches — a product release, a sale start, a campaign go-live.
To work in the other direction — finding the date that falls a set number of days from now — use the days from today calculator or the date calculator. To find which weekday your target lands on, try the day of the week calculator.
Common days until questions
Does the calculator count today as one of the days?
No. It measures the gap from today to your target date, so today is not included. A date that is tomorrow returns 1, and a date that is today returns 0. If you need the inclusive total (today plus the target), add one to the result.
What happens if I enter a date that has already passed?
The count shows 0. There are no days left until a date in the past, so the tool clamps the result at zero rather than showing a negative number. To measure how long ago a past date was, use the days between dates calculator instead.
Does it count weekends and holidays?
Yes — every calendar day counts, including weekends and public holidays. If you only want working days (Monday to Friday), use the working days between dates calculator, which skips Saturdays and Sundays.
How this calculator works and sources
This days until calculator subtracts today's date from the target date and returns the whole number of days remaining. The count is exclusive of today, rounds up any partial day, and is clamped to a minimum of 0 so past dates never show a negative result. The maths runs entirely in your browser — nothing is sent to a server — and the calendar arithmetic follows the standard ISO 8601 date system used worldwide.
