How the result is calculated
Your belt size is two inches larger than your pant or waist size:belt size (in) = pant/waist size (in) + 2
  • The extra 2 inches put the buckle on the middle hole.
  • Centimetres = inches × 2.54; EU size = cm rounded to the nearest 5.
  • So a 34 pant → a 36 belt → 91.4 cm → EU 90.

Definition

What is your belt size?

Your belt size is the length of the belt measured from where the leather meets the buckle to the hole you actually fasten — and it is not the same as your waist or pant size. As a rule, a belt runs about two inches larger than your trouser size, because it has to wrap around your body plus the waistband of your trousers and a tucked-in shirt, with the buckle resting on the middle hole. This belt size calculator turns a pant size or a waist measurement into the right belt size in inches, centimetres, and EU sizing instantly.

Belts are sold in even inch sizes (30, 32, 34, 36…) and in EU centimetre sizes that step by 5 (75, 80, 85, 90…). The number printed on a belt is the distance to its middle hole, so a size-36 belt fits a roughly 34-inch waist with room to adjust up or down a hole as your weight changes.

The length from the base of the buckle to the middle hole, in inches or centimetres. Usually 2 inches more than your pant size.
The flat measurement of your trousers or your waist circumference. The starting point for sizing a belt.
The center hole a belt is designed to fasten on — most belts have five holes, so the middle is the third.
Belt length in centimetres, rounded to the nearest 5. EU 90 is the same as a US 36 belt.
The rule

How to calculate your belt size (the +2 inch rule)

There are two reliable ways to size a belt, and both use the same simple rule. The fastest is to start from the pant size you already buy; the most accurate is to measure your waist where you actually wear a belt. Either way, add two inches and round to the nearest even size.

  1. From your pant size. Take the waist number on your off-the-rack trousers and add 2. A 34 pant → a 36 belt.
  2. From a waist measurement. Thread a tape through the belt loops of trousers that fit, read the inches, and add 2. A 34-inch waist → a 36 belt.
  3. Round to an even size. Belts come in even inches, so round the result to the nearest even number and you have your belt size.
belt size (in) = pant or waist size (in) + 2
belt size (cm) = belt size (in) × 2.54
EU belt size = belt size (cm) rounded to the nearest 5

In plain terms: buy a belt one size up from your trousers. The two extra inches put the buckle on the middle hole, leaving a hole on either side to tighten or loosen. If you are between sizes or buying for low-rise jeans worn on the hip, size up rather than down.

Worked example

A worked example using the belt size calculator

Example: what belt size for a 34 waist?

Daniel wears 34-inch trousers and wants to order a belt online without guessing. Here is exactly how the calculator works through it.

Step 1 — Start with the pant size

Daniel selects pant size as the input mode and enters 34. (If he measured his bare waist instead and got 34 inches, the result would be identical — both modes use the same rule.)

Step 2 — Add two inches

34 + 2 = 36, which is already an even number, so the recommended belt size is 36 inches. This is the size where the buckle will sit on the middle hole.

Step 3 — Read the conversions

The calculator converts 36 inches to centimetres (36 × 2.54 = 91.4 cm) and rounds that to the nearest 5 for the EU size: EU 90. So Daniel orders a US 36 / EU 90 belt.

Belt size 36 in (91.4 cm · EU 90)
A 34-inch pant or waist needs a 36-inch belt. That is 91.4 cm, or EU size 90 — the well-known US 36 ↔ EU 90 match.
Method 1

How to find your belt size from a belt you already own

The most accurate way to size a new belt is to copy one that already fits. This skips the pant-size step entirely because you are measuring real, worn-in length.

  1. Lay a belt that fits you well flat on a table.
  2. Start the tape where the leather meets the buckle — not at the tip of the buckle prong.
  3. Measure to the hole you fasten most often (with five holes, that is usually the third, middle hole).
  4. Read the length to the nearest inch (or centimetre). That number is your belt size.
Measure to the hole you actually use, not the end of the belt. The printed belt size refers to the middle hole, so measuring to your worn-in hole gives you a like-for-like number to order.
Method 2

How to measure your waist for a belt

If you do not have a belt to copy, measure your waist where the belt will sit. Don't measure your bare stomach at the navel — measure over the trousers and shirt you will wear, because the belt has to clear those layers.

  1. Put on the trousers and shirt you would normally wear with the belt.
  2. Thread a soft tape measure through the belt loops, just like a belt, and bring it together at the front.
  3. Keep it snug but not tight — you should be able to slide a finger under it.
  4. Read the inches, then add 2 to get your belt size (this calculator does the +2 for you).

No tape measure? Use a piece of string, mark where it overlaps, then measure the string against a ruler. For a belt worn with low-rise jeans on the hip, measure at the hip rather than the natural waist, and consider sizing up an extra inch.

By style

Men's vs women's belt sizes

The way you measure a belt is identical for men and women — it is always buckle-to-hole length. What differs is the typical size range and where the belt is worn. The +2 inch rule from a pant size is reliable for men's belts and for women's belts worn at the natural waist with trousers.

  • Men's belts commonly run from about 30 in (EU 75) to 48 in (EU 120) and are usually worn at the waist with the +2 inch rule.
  • Women's belts span a wider range and are often worn higher (at the natural waist) or lower (over a dress on the hip), so the +2 rule from a dress size is a starting point — measure where you'll wear it.
  • Some brands label both systems, e.g. 42/105 means a US 42-inch or EU 105 cm belt — the same belt, two number systems.
Women's sizing is far less standardized than men's, especially for fashion belts worn over clothing. When in doubt, measure an existing belt or your waist directly rather than converting a dress size.

How belt sizes are measured (buckle to middle hole)

The single most important fact in belt sizing is where the measurement starts and ends. The belt size is the distance from the base of the buckle (where the leather begins, not the tip of the prong) to the middle hole. Because most belts have five holes spaced one inch apart, you get about two inches of adjustment in each direction.

Hole (5-hole belt)Fit vs. labelled size
Hole 1 (closest to buckle)Loosest — about 2 in larger
Hole 2About 1 in larger
Hole 3 (middle)The labelled belt size
Hole 4About 1 in smaller
Hole 5 (farthest)Tightest — about 2 in smaller

The printed belt size is the middle (third) hole. Each hole is roughly one inch, so a single belt covers about a 4-inch waist range.

This is why buying to the middle hole matters: it leaves room to adjust without the loose tail of the belt sticking out or the buckle pulling to the very last hole. If you find yourself on the first or last hole, the belt is the wrong size.

Quick answers

Common belt size questions

Is belt size the same as waist size?

No. Belt size is about two inches larger than your waist or pant size, because the belt has to wrap around your trousers and shirt and fasten on the middle hole. A 34-inch waist takes a 36-inch belt.

What size belt for a 34 waist?

A 36-inch belt. Add two inches to your pant size: 34 + 2 = 36. That is EU size 90.

What size is a 90 belt?

EU 90 is a US 36-inch belt, which fits roughly a 34-inch waist. EU belt sizes are the length in centimetres, and 36 inches is 91.4 cm, rounded to 90.

Should I size up or down if I'm between sizes?

Size up. The extra room lets you fasten on a middle hole and adjust as your weight changes. A belt that only reaches its last hole has no room to grow.

Methodology

How this calculator works and sources

This belt size calculator applies the standard menswear rule exactly: belt size = pant or waist size + 2 inches, rounded to the nearest even inch. It converts inches to centimetres at 2.54 cm per inch and defines the EU size as the belt length in centimetres rounded to the nearest 5 — which is why US 36 maps to EU 90. The maths is pure arithmetic run in your browser; nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

The +2 inch rule, the buckle-to-middle-hole measurement, and the cm/EU conversions are standard, well-documented menswear sizing conventions used by sizing guides such as Proper Cloth and Hanks Belts. Individual brands vary, so always check a maker's own size chart and, when possible, measure a belt that already fits.

Questions

Frequently asked questions about the free belt size calculator

A belt size calculator is a free online tool that helps you find your belt size from a pant size or waist measurement using the +2-inch rule, with inch, cm, and EU sizing and a full belt size chart. Belt size = pant or waist size + 2 inches, rounded to an even size; the buckle then sits on the middle hole. It runs entirely in your browser with instant results and no sign-up.
No — pants size does not equal belt size. Belt size is bigger because it has to accommodate your trousers and other clothes. As a rule, belt size is about two inches larger than your waist or pant size, so a 34-inch waist takes a 36-inch belt.
If you're a size 34, your belt size is 36. This follows the general rule that your pant size plus two inches equals your belt size: 34 + 2 = 36, which is EU size 90.
A European belt size 90 is the same as a US 36 belt, which fits roughly a 34-inch waist. EU belt sizes are the belt length in centimetres, and 36 inches is 91.4 cm, rounded to 90.
Lay the belt flat and measure from where the leather meets the buckle (not the tip of the buckle) to the hole you fasten most often — usually the middle, third hole on a five-hole belt. That length is your belt size.
Size up. The optimal belt fits comfortably on the centre hole, with holes on either side in case your waist size changes. A belt on its last hole has no room to adjust.
