Gross lifetime earnings vs. take-home pay
This calculator measures gross lifetime earnings — your total pay before income tax, payroll tax, and retirement contributions come out. Your take-home lifetime total will be lower, typically by a quarter to a third once federal, state, and FICA taxes are counted. Gross earnings are the right figure for comparing career paths, education choices, and the true cost of a pay gap; take-home is the figure for budgeting what actually lands in your account.
How to calculate your lifetime earnings
The calculator runs a three-step process, and you can follow the same logic by hand for any single year.
- Start with this year's salary. Year one of the projection pays exactly what you earn now — no raise has been applied yet.
- Grow it by one raise each year. Multiply by (1 + your raise rate) for every following year, so year two pays salary × (1 + g), year three pays salary × (1 + g)², and so on.
- Add up every year. Sum each year's salary from now until retirement. The closed-form shortcut — salary × ((1 + g)^n − 1) / g — does this instantly for all the years at once.
A worked example using the lifetime earnings calculator
Sam is 25, earns $50,000, and expects to work 40 years until retiring at 65, with average raises of about 3% a year. Here is each step the calculator runs to find Sam's lifetime earnings.
Step 1 — Set the starting salary and career length
Year one pays the full $50,000. With 40 working years ahead and a 3% average raise, the calculator has everything it needs: a starting salary, a growth rate, and a number of years.
Step 2 — Grow the salary by 3% each year
Each year's pay is the previous year's pay times 1.03. By the final working year — year 40 — that $50,000 has grown to about $158,351. Sam's last paycheck is more than three times the first, entirely from steady 3% raises compounding.

Lifetime earnings by education level
The biggest single lever on lifetime earnings is education. Georgetown University's Center on Education and the Workforce, analysing US Census data, put a median lifetime-earnings figure on each level of attainment in its report The College Payoff. The gaps are large: a bachelor's degree holder earns a median of $2.8 million over a career — about 75% more than a worker with only a high-school diploma.

Because raises compound — every future raise is calculated on a higher base — a small difference in the yearly rate snowballs into a six-figure gap in lifetime earnings.
