How the salary calculator works
The salary calculator converts between annual, monthly, biweekly, weekly, and hourly pay using a standard 40-hour, 52-week work year. Enter any one figure and it instantly fills in all the others. The baseline is 2,080 working hours per year — 52 weeks multiplied by 40 hours — which is the standard used by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and most US payroll systems.
Worked example: $75,000 annual salary
Alex earns a $75,000 annual salary working 40 hours a week. The calculator breaks this down into every pay period so Alex can compare job offers, plan a budget, or verify a paycheck.
Common salaries across all pay periods
The table converts eight common annual salaries into monthly, biweekly, and hourly equivalents. All figures assume a standard 40-hour, 52-week year and are gross (before tax).
| Annual salary | Monthly | Biweekly | Hourly |
|---|---|---|---|
| $40,000 | $3,333 | $1,538 | $19.23 |
| $50,000 | $4,167 | $1,923 | $24.04 |
| $60,000 | $5,000 | $2,308 | $28.85 |
| $75,000 | $6,250 | $2,885 | $36.06 |
| $90,000 | $7,500 | $3,462 | $43.27 |
| $100,000 | $8,333 | $3,846 | $48.08 |
| $120,000 | $10,000 | $4,615 | $57.69 |
| $150,000 | $12,500 | $5,769 | $72.12 |
Calculated using 2,080 annual hours (52 weeks × 40 hrs). Biweekly = annual ÷ 26. Monthly = annual ÷ 12.
Tips for using salary conversions
Knowing your equivalent hourly rate is essential when comparing a salaried position to a contract role, negotiating a raise, or evaluating whether overtime is worth it. The gross rate is only half the picture — account for benefits, paid time off, and employer retirement contributions when making like-for-like comparisons.
- Compare total compensation, not just salary — a salaried role with health insurance and a 401(k) match can be worth $10,000–$20,000 more than the raw number suggests.
- Adjust for actual hours worked — if a salaried job routinely requires 50 hours a week, your real hourly rate is annual ÷ 2,600, not ÷ 2,080.
- Use the hourly figure for freelance rate-setting — add 25–40% above your salaried hourly equivalent to cover self-employment taxes, benefits you fund yourself, and unpaid admin time.
- Check biweekly vs. semi-monthly — biweekly means 26 paychecks a year (two months have three); semi-monthly means exactly 24. The calculator uses biweekly (annual ÷ 26).
- Re-run after any raise — even a 3% annual increase changes your hourly rate enough to affect freelance quoting or overtime calculations.
Accuracy and limitations
All figures are gross pre-tax amounts based on a standard 2,080-hour work year. Actual take-home pay depends on federal and state income tax, Social Security and Medicare taxes, health insurance premiums, and retirement contributions. Part-time schedules, unpaid leave, shift differentials, and overtime are not reflected. The tool is designed for straightforward 40-hour salaried or hourly positions.
