How it's calculated

How the salary-to-hourly calculator works

The salary-to-hourly calculator divides an annual salary by the total hours worked in a year. The standard assumption is 52 weeks at 40 hours per week, giving 2,080 annual hours — the figure used by the U.S. federal government and most payroll systems. You can override both weeks and hours per week to match a part-time schedule or an actual working pattern.

Hourly rate = annual salary ÷ (weeks worked per year × hours per week)
Standard: hourly rate = annual salary ÷ 2,080
2,080 = 52 weeks × 40 hours per week
U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics — Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics.
Example

Worked example: $65,000 salary to hourly

Example: $65,000/year, 40 hrs/week

Sam earns $65,000 a year in a standard full-time role. Before quoting a freelance rate or comparing to an hourly contract, Sam needs to know the per-hour equivalent.

Hourly = $65,000 ÷ 2,080 = $31.25
Daily = $65,000 ÷ 260 = $250.00 (260 = 52 × 5 days)
Monthly = $65,000 ÷ 12 = $5,416.67
$31.25/hour
Sam's $65,000 salary is equivalent to $31.25 per hour at full-time hours — a useful baseline for negotiating contract rates or evaluating hourly job offers.

Practical tips

Tips for salary-to-hourly conversions

The raw hourly equivalent of a salary is a starting point. When switching from salaried to hourly or freelance work, several factors push your required rate higher than the simple calculation suggests.

  • Add the benefits load — employer-paid health insurance, retirement match, and paid leave are worth 25–35% of base salary on average; a freelancer must fund all of these from their rate.
  • Account for self-employment tax — self-employed workers pay both the employee and employer halves of FICA (15.3% total vs. 7.65%), adding ~7.65% to the effective cost of going independent.
  • Factor in non-billable time — marketing, admin, invoicing, and downtime mean only 70–80% of your hours may be billable; divide your target annual earnings by billable hours, not total hours.
  • Use actual hours for salaried roles — if you work 50 hours a week rather than 40, your true hourly rate is annual ÷ 2,600 (52 × 50), which may reveal a salaried role is less competitive than it appears.
  • Compare total comp, not just wages — when evaluating a W-2 hourly offer against a salaried role, include the cash value of any employer-provided benefits in the salaried side of the comparison.
Accuracy & limits

Accuracy and limitations

Results are gross pre-tax hourly equivalents based on a standard 2,080-hour year. Actual take-home pay depends on tax filing status, deductions, state taxes, and benefit elections. The calculator does not account for paid holidays, vacation accrual, sick leave, or overtime. Users with irregular schedules should enter actual weeks and hours per week rather than the 52/40 defaults.
