The short answer

How many steps are in a mile?

For an average adult walking at a normal pace, there are about 2,200 steps in a mile — the figure shown above. Because step length differs from person to person, the realistic spread is roughly 1,800 to 2,500 steps per mile: shorter walkers land near the top of that range, taller walkers near the bottom. You'll also see a round 2,000 quoted as a rule of thumb, but for a typical adult stride 2,200 is the more accurate centre.

1 mile = 5,280 feet = 63,360 inches
steps per mile = 63,360 inches ÷ step length (inches)

So the single number can never be exact for everyone — it is an average that collapses height, pace, and stride into one figure. The rest of this page is about why the number lands where it does, and how to find your own. If instead you want to convert a step count into a distance, the steps to miles calculator does that division for you.

Walking ≈ 2,200 · range 1,800–2,500
2,200 steps per mile is the working average for adult walking. Notably shorter or taller than average? Nudge your own estimate toward 2,500 or toward 1,800 using the by-height table below.
The biggest driver

Steps per mile by height (detailed table)

Height is the single biggest reason the steps-per-mile number moves, because taller people have longer legs and naturally take longer steps. A widely used estimate sets step length ≈ height × 0.413; feed that into the steps-per-mile formula and the pattern is clear — every few inches of height shifts the count by roughly a hundred steps:

HeightApprox. step lengthSteps per mile (walking)
4'10" (147 cm)24.0 in~2,640 steps
5'0" (152 cm)24.8 in~2,560 steps
5'2" (157 cm)25.6 in~2,480 steps
5'4" (163 cm)26.4 in~2,400 steps
5'6" (168 cm)27.3 in~2,320 steps
5'8" (173 cm)28.1 in~2,260 steps
5'10" (178 cm)28.9 in~2,190 steps
6'0" (183 cm)29.7 in~2,130 steps
6'2" (188 cm)30.6 in~2,070 steps
6'4" (193 cm)31.4 in~2,020 steps
6'6" (198 cm)32.2 in~1,970 steps

Step length = height × 0.413; steps per mile = 63,360 ÷ step length (inches). Values rounded. Consistent with the steps-to-miles by-height table.

Two things stand out. The spread is real but bounded — from about 2,640 steps per mile for a short adult down to roughly 1,970 for a very tall one. And the whole table brackets 2,200, which sits right around average adult height — exactly why 2,200 is the headline figure. This is a walking table; at a run the same person covers a mile in fewer steps, as the next section shows.

Pace changes it

Walking vs running: steps per mile

The same person takes fewer steps per mile running than walking, because stride lengthens as you speed up. Running typically needs about 20–25% fewer steps than walking over the same mile. So while walking sits around 2,200 steps per mile (1,800–2,500), running falls closer to 1,400–1,900 steps per mile, and a fast sprinter with a long, airborne stride can dip even lower.

ActivityTypical steps per mileWhy
Slow / casual walk~2,400–2,500Short, frequent steps
Average walk~2,200The page's anchor figure
Brisk walk~2,000–2,100Stride lengthens slightly
Jog~1,700–1,900Longer, springier stride
Run~1,400–1,700Long airborne stride

Steps per mile fall as pace rises because step length grows with speed. Ranges for an average-height adult.

This is why a pedometer set to a fixed steps-per-mile value drifts when you switch between walking and running: it counts the same steps but the real distance per step has changed. If you mostly run, anchor your own estimate nearer 1,600 than 2,200.

The mechanics

What determines your steps per mile: stride and cadence

Two things together set how many steps you take in a mile: step length (how far each step covers) and, indirectly, cadence (how many steps you take per minute). Step length is what divides into a mile to give the count; cadence sets how fast you rack those steps up, but not how many a mile takes.

The distance from one footfall to the next — heel of one foot to heel of the other. This is the number that divides into a mile, and what a pedometer counts as one step.
The distance from one footfall to the next of the SAME foot — two steps. Stride is double step length, so don't mix them up when estimating steps per mile.
Steps per minute. Higher cadence means you finish the mile sooner but does not change how many steps the mile takes.

Step length itself is set by leg length (hence height), how briskly you walk (faster walking lengthens the step a little), and your gait — age, fitness, balance, and even footwear and terrain all nudge it. A short, shuffling stride on a slow stroll pushes the count toward 2,500; a long, purposeful stride pulls it toward 2,000. Cadence is the companion lever: at a steady step length, raising your steps per minute is what the how long to walk a mile calculator turns into a time per mile.

Why it differs

Why women average more steps per mile than men

On average, women take more steps per mile than men — roughly 2,385 steps per mile for a 5'4" woman versus about 2,216 for a 5'9" man. But the gap is not about sex itself; it is almost entirely about height. Women are on average shorter than men, shorter legs mean a shorter step length, and a shorter step length means more steps to cover the same mile.

GroupAverage heightApprox. steps per mile
Average woman5'4" (163 cm)~2,400 steps
Average man5'9" (175 cm)~2,200 steps

Figures from the height-based formula at each group's average height. The difference tracks height, not sex.

A 5'9" woman and a 5'9" man take essentially the same number of steps per mile. Use your own height in the table above rather than a sex-based average — it is the more accurate input.

How to count your own steps per mile

The averages are a fine starting point, but the most accurate steps-per-mile figure is the one you measure. There are two simple ways — a short stride sample, or a measured distance.

Method 1 — measure your step length

  1. Mark a start line and stand with your toes on it, on flat ground.
  2. Walk 10 normal steps at your everyday pace — don't stretch your stride — and stop on the 10th footfall.
  3. Measure from the start line to the back of your heel, in inches, and divide by 10 for your average step length. Example: 264 in ÷ 10 = 26.4 in.
  4. Divide 63,360 by that length for your steps per mile: 63,360 ÷ 26.4 ≈ 2,400.

Method 2 — walk a known distance and count

Even more accurate: walk a measured quarter-mile (one lap of a standard 400 m track is close), count every step, and multiply by four. Averaging over a longer stretch smooths out the start-and-stop error of a 10-step sample and captures your real walking gait.

Worked example

A worked example using the how-many-steps-in-a-mile calculator

Example: refining the 2,200 figure for a 5'4" walker

The calculator above shows the adult average — 2,200 steps per mile, with a stated range of 1,800–2,500. Priya is 5'4" and wants the number that fits her, so she reads the headline, then refines it with her height. Here is the exact path.

  1. Read the calculator's headline. It returns 2,200 steps per mile — the average for an adult — and notes the 1,800–2,500 spread.
  2. Find her step length from height. step length ≈ 64 in × 0.413 = 26.4 in.
  3. Divide a mile by that step length. steps per mile = 63,360 ÷ 26.4.
  4. Get her personal figure. 63,360 ÷ 26.4 ≈ 2,400 steps per mile.
≈ 2,400 steps per mile for Priya
Because she is a little shorter than average, Priya's real figure is about 2,400 — toward the upper end of the 1,800–2,500 range the calculator shows, and 200 above the 2,200 default. A 6'0" walker would land near 2,130 instead, below the default.
Metric

Steps per mile vs steps per kilometre

A kilometre is shorter than a mile — 1 mile = 1.609 km — so it takes fewer steps. Divide your steps per mile by 1.609 to get your steps per kilometre. At the 2,200 walking average, that works out to about 1,370 steps per kilometre.

Pace / heightSteps per mileSteps per km
Average walk~2,200~1,370
Shorter adult (5'0")~2,560~1,590
Taller adult (6'0")~2,130~1,320
Running~1,600~990

steps per km = steps per mile ÷ 1.609. Figures rounded.

If you track in kilometres, the steps to km calculator converts a step count straight into metric distance. To go the other way — turning a distance into a step target — the miles to steps calculator multiplies miles by 2,200.

Methodology

Formula and sources

This page uses 2,200 steps per mile as the adult walking average — the figure the calculator displays — with a working spread of 1,800–2,500. The by-height table is derived from the common step-length estimate (step length ≈ height × 0.413) and the fact that one mile is 63,360 inches, and is kept consistent with the steps-to-miles by-height table. The walking-versus-running gap (running ≈ 20–25% fewer steps) and the men/women averages (~2,216 vs ~2,385 steps per mile, driven by average height) reflect widely reported step-count data.

Steps-per-mile by height, pace, and sex (≈2,200/mile walking; running ~20–25% fewer; women ~2,385 vs men ~2,216 by average height).
Questions

Frequently asked questions about the free how many steps in a mile calculator

A how many steps in a mile calculator is a free online tool that helps you average steps per mile for adults. Average is about 2,200 steps. Taller people take fewer. It runs entirely in your browser with instant results and no sign-up.
Height is the biggest driver. Using step length ≈ height × 0.413, a 5'0" adult takes about 2,560 steps per mile, a 5'4" adult about 2,400, a 5'8" adult about 2,260, a 6'0" adult about 2,130, and a 6'4" adult about 2,020. The 2,200 average sits at roughly average adult height, which is why it's the headline figure.
About 2,400 steps per mile for a woman of average height (5'4"), versus roughly 2,200 for a man of average height (5'9"). The difference is entirely about height, not sex — a 5'9" woman and a 5'9" man take essentially the same number of steps per mile. Use your own height for the most accurate figure.
Running takes fewer steps than walking — about 20–25% fewer — because your stride lengthens at speed. Walking is around 2,200 steps per mile (1,800–2,500 depending on height), while running falls closer to 1,400–1,900 steps per mile, and a fast runner with a long stride can be lower still.
About 1,370 steps per kilometre at the 2,200-steps-per-mile walking average, since a kilometre is shorter than a mile (1 mile = 1.609 km). Divide your steps per mile by 1.609 to get your steps per km: a shorter adult is nearer 1,590 and a taller adult nearer 1,320.
Yes — it's the main factor. Taller people have longer legs and a longer step length, so they cover a mile in fewer steps. A six-inch height difference changes step length enough to shift steps per mile by roughly 20%, which is why the realistic range runs from about 1,970 steps (very tall) up to 2,640 (very short).
Measure your step length: walk 10 normal steps from a start line, measure to the back of your heel in inches, and divide by 10. Then divide 63,360 (inches in a mile) by that step length. For example, a 26.4-inch step gives 63,360 ÷ 26.4 ≈ 2,400 steps per mile. For more accuracy, count your steps over a measured quarter-mile and multiply by four.
