How many steps is one mile?
One mile of walking is about 2,200 steps for an average adult — the figure this calculator multiplies by. You'll also see 2,000 quoted as a round number, and because a mile is 5,280 feet (63,360 inches), the exact count depends entirely on your step length: the distance from one footfall to the next. A longer step means fewer steps per mile; a shorter step means more.

A neat result: a 5K is about 6,840 walking steps — just over the 6,600 of a 3-mile walk, and not far off a 10,000-step day on its own once warm-up and cool-down are counted. A marathon, at roughly 57,680 steps, is close to six typical 10,000-step days packed into one.
Steps per mile by height
The 2,200 figure is an average, and the biggest single reason your real count differs is height: taller people have longer legs and take longer steps, so they reach a mile in fewer steps. A common estimate sets step length ≈ height × 0.413, and feeding that into the steps-per-mile formula shows the spread — and why one number can only ever be a midpoint:

The spread is real but modest — from about 2,560 steps per mile for a shorter adult down to roughly 2,020 for a taller one — and it brackets the 2,200 default, which sits right around average adult height. That is exactly why the calculator uses 2,200. If you're notably shorter or taller than average, scale your own estimate up or down: a 5-foot adult walking 3 miles logs closer to 7,680 steps, a 6-foot-4 adult closer to 6,060.
How to measure your own step length
The by-height estimate is a good start, but the most accurate steps-per-mile number is one you measure. It takes two minutes and a tape measure, and it captures your actual gait, not just your height. Once you have your own steps-per-mile figure, swap it in for 2,200 to convert any distance more precisely.
- Mark a start line. Stand with your toes on a line on flat ground.
- Walk 10 normal steps. Walk at your everyday pace — don't stretch your stride — and stop on the 10th footfall.
- Measure the distance. Measure from the start line to the back of your heel, in inches.
- Divide by 10. That gives your average step length in inches — for example, 280 inches over 10 steps = 28 inches per step.
- Find your steps per mile. Divide 63,360 by your step length. At 28 inches that's 63,360 ÷ 28 ≈ 2,263 steps per mile — then multiply by your distance to get steps.
Walking vs running: why a run takes fewer steps
This calculator assumes walking, where 2,200 steps per mile is the average. When you run, your stride lengthens with speed, so the same mile takes fewer steps — typically 1,400–1,700 per mile at a steady running pace. That gap is why a runner and a walker covering the identical distance end the day with very different step counts.

How far do you walk to hit a step goal?
Run the conversion the other way and it answers a planning question: how many miles must I walk to reach my step target? Since steps = miles × 2,200, the distance for a goal is simply the goal divided by 2,200. That turns an abstract step number into a walk you can actually plan.

How accurate is the miles to steps calculator?
The arithmetic is exact; the uncertainty lives entirely in the 2,200-steps-per-mile assumption, which stands in for an average adult walking stride. A few things move your real step count away from the number on screen:
- Your height and stride. Taller, longer-strided walkers cover a mile in fewer steps (down toward 2,000), so the calculator slightly overestimates their step count; shorter walkers are the reverse.
- Walking vs running. A running stride is longer, so a mile of running can take only 1,400–1,700 steps — well below 2,200. For runs, the calculator overstates the step count.
- Pedometer error. Phones and watches miscount — they miss steps when your hands are still and add phantom steps from arm movement — so the count you actually log can differ from any formula.
