How the EV electricity cost calculator works

Charging an electric vehicle costs money in proportion to how much electricity your car pulls from the grid, multiplied by what your utility charges per kilowatt-hour. Unlike gasoline, electricity prices vary substantially by time of day, utility, and state — so knowing your actual rate is critical to an accurate estimate.

Charging cost ($) = Energy used (kWh) × Electricity rate ($/kWh)

Annual charging cost = Annual miles ÷ Efficiency (mi/kWh) × Rate ($/kWh)

Level 2 home charging (240V EVSE, typically 7.2 kW) adds 25–40 miles of range per hour of charging. A fully depleted 75 kWh battery takes roughly 10–11 hours to charge from empty. DC fast charging at public stations restores 80% charge in 20–45 minutes but typically costs 20–30% more per kWh than home charging — and some networks charge per minute rather than per kWh.

Worked example: annual charging cost for a Tesla Model 3

Example: 15,000 miles/year, 4.0 mi/kWh, $0.16/kWh

A commuter drives 15,000 miles per year in a Tesla Model 3 rated at 4.0 mi/kWh. Their utility charges $0.16/kWh. They charge almost exclusively at home. What does the EV cost to run annually?

Energy needed = 15,000 ÷ 4.0 = 3,750 kWh per year
Annual cost = 3,750 × $0.16 = $600 per year
Per-mile cost = $0.16 ÷ 4.0 = $0.04 per mile

At $0.16/kWh and 4.0 mi/kWh, driving 15,000 miles a year costs just $600 in electricity — about $0.04 per mile, compared to roughly $0.12 per mile for a 30-mpg gasoline vehicle at $3.50/gallon.

Tips to lower your EV charging costs

The rate you pay for electricity has a bigger impact on your EV running costs than almost any other variable. These strategies can cut your annual charging bill significantly.

  • Use Time-of-Use (TOU) rates — Many utilities offer EV TOU plans with off-peak rates as low as $0.07–0.09/kWh overnight. Scheduling charging from midnight to 6 AM can halve your electricity cost compared to peak rates.
  • Minimize DC fast charging — Public fast charging costs $0.30–0.60/kWh on networks like Electrify America and EVgo — two to four times the home rate. Reserve DC fast charging for road trips; charge at home for daily driving.
  • Precondition on grid power — Warming or cooling the cabin while still plugged in uses grid electricity instead of battery capacity. This preserves miles of range, especially in winter when cold reduces battery efficiency by 20–40%.
  • Monitor charging losses — Level 2 AC charging has about 10–15% conversion loss (AC to DC in the on-board charger). DC fast charging bypasses this. Factor charging efficiency into your actual cost-per-mile calculations.
  • Check utility rebates — Most states and many utilities offer Level 2 EVSE installation rebates ($300–$1,000) and EV purchase incentives. Real-world accuracy depends on how closely those inputs match your actual situation. The EIA's reported national average rate of $0.16/kWh in 2024 masks wide variation: Hawaii averages over $0.38/kWh while Idaho averages under $0.10/kWh. Always use your actual utility bill rate for meaningful results.

EV efficiency (mi/kWh) also varies significantly with driving conditions. EPA ratings are tested at 75°F; real-world efficiency drops in cold weather (20–40% reduction at 20°F), at highway speeds above 65 mph, when towing, or with heavy HVAC use. The calculator does not model seasonal variation or charging loss — for a conservative estimate, reduce your stated efficiency by 10–15% to account for real-world conditions.
